Registering your Brand to use 10DLC aka SMS Messaging

Updated on

Why Do I need to Register my Brand?

Recently, more and more businesses have realized the benefits of using messaging as a channel to create a 5-star customer experience. However, with the influx of businesses utilizing text messaging over the years, carriers have put more scrutiny on business texting (aka. “A2P texting”).

To protect consumers, U.S. carriers have designated a third-party company, The Campaign Registry, to register brands and campaigns via campaign service providers. The Campaign Registry, or TCR, is the organization that will assess the trust score assigned to each brand (you) and pass along that information to the carriers to assign their message limitations according to each carrier’s system.

To continue using Shaker SMS services, we need to register the business associated with your Shaker 10-digit phone number(s) (aka 10DLC). Registering your business numbers will let the major carriers know that you are a trusted business sending legitimate text messages, help you, avoid fines, and maintain your deliverability.

We understand that navigating the registration process can feel overwhelming, but we are here to help you stay compliant without seeing a disruption in your messaging.

Tips for Filling OUt the Business Profile Registration Form

It is important that the Business Legal Name and Address exactly match what is on your EIN or CCN registration letter, ie Shaker Real Estate Services, LLC. If the information doesn't match, your registration will be rejected.

Business Registration Type is the identification number for your business:

  • Businesses in the United States: Employer Identification Number (EIN)

    • If you are an independent contractor without an EIN, it is recommended that you utilize your brokerage information.

  • Businesses in Canada: Provincial Corporation Number (CCN)
You only need to register if you send texts to people in the US

Mobile Carrier SMS Registration Requirements

You will need to register a campaign for each messaging use case such as Customer Communication or Marketing. For each campaign, you will need to provide sample text messages.

These example texts are used during the business registration review process to confirm that you are sending FCC Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA)--compliant text messages.

If you are using Shaker Templates to text clients, copy and paste examples from your template messages.

How Is Opt-In Obtained - Describe in detail how recipients opt-in to receive text messages from your team. If you reference a website with opt-in language please ensure that the website is operational and the opt-in language highly visible when leads enter their phone numbers. Write out the full URL of the website where you obtain consent if it differs from the one you filled in earlier in the form. Reviewers are rejecting registrations based on incorrect information in this step at the highest rate. Double-check that your opt-in information is correct before submitting. You may need to make adjustments to your website before submitting if opt-in language is not present

Tips on SMS health and sending compliant text messages

Carriers look for things that would be harmful to their customers or unwanted. The eight triggers below are common in what carriers have confirmed as spam texts:

  • Don’t send mass messages that include shortened URLs like bit.ly, tiny.url, etc.

  • Avoid sending a message with a link

  • Avoid sending naked links (that means include the “https://”)

  • Don’t include ALL CAPS anywhere in your message

  • Limit using special characters except where necessary (especially $ signs or emojis)

  • Don’t send the same exact message to large groups over and over again - example: promoting a listing to your database.

  • Avoid sending texts the size of emails - short and sweet is better

  • Make sure your messages sound like an actual human wrote them and are free of spelling or grammatical errors

  • Reserve text messaging for important information and avoid over-marketing via text
